• Emergency Management: Acts as the director of emergency management, holding significant authority during natural disasters or public emergencies.

• Judicial Duties: While focused on administration, they handle specific court cases such as probate, guardianship, mental health cases, and appeals from justice courts.

• Budgeting: Prepares the county budget and manages financial matters, particularly in counties with fewer than 225,000 residents.

• Election Management: Serves as the chair of the county election commission and handles duties related to local elections.

 

Contrary to their title, in larger Texas counties, the judge’s role is primarily administrative rather than presiding over traditional courtroom trials.
